Cascade May Get New 10-Acre Park on Campbellton Road

The purchase of the land for the park would cost about $325,000.

The Cascade community, once called "park poor," may be getting a new park.

If the Atlanta City Council approves of the land purchase, the 10.18-acre park would be located at 2853 Campbellton Road in Councilwoman Keisha Bottoms' District 11.

The city's finance/executive committee last week held its second reading of the ordinance, which would authorize Mayor Kasim Reed to negotiate and purchase the property from its current owner, The Conservation Fund, in an amount not to exceed $325,000.

Funding for the property will come from the city’s Park Impact Fee West fund.

According to a study by the Trust for Public Land, a national nonprofit that conserves land for parks and playgrounds in urban and rural areas, released last May, southwest Atlanta and northwest Atlanta are "park poor."

The study ranked Atlanta's overall park system as below average, ranking it as No. 26 out of 40 cities studied.

The new Campbellton Road park would help Reed reach his goal of being the first city to have a park within walking distance of 100 percent of its residents.

“The City of Atlanta is always looking for parkland that complements its current inventory and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs is constantly working to help meet Mayor Reed’s goal of having a park within a one-half mile radius of all Atlanta residents,” stated Director of Parks Doug Voss in an email to Patch. “To this end, Campbellton Road is helpful, and it is also well priced for the road frontage and acreage."

In February, the Atlanta City Council approved the land purchase from The Conservation Fund for a new park on Lenox Road in Buckhead.
