Congressman John Lewis on President Obama's Support for Same Sex Marriage

President Barack Obama became the first President in history to publicly support same sex marriage equality,

In a statement released on Wednesday, May 9th, Rep. John Lewis announced his support for what he called the President's growth on the same sex marriage issue and is happy to see him and other Americans beginning to "empathize with the struggles of same sex couples."

The Congressman John Lewis' complete statement is as follows:

“In President Obama's interview with Robin Roberts, he described the kind of steps many Americans have taken on the issue of same sex marriage.

Once people begin to see the similarities between themselves and others, instead of focusing on differences, they come to recognize that equality is essentially a matter of human rights and human dignity.

The President's growth reflects the growth of many Americans on this issue.  I am glad to see more Americans, including President Obama, empathize with the struggles of same sex couples and express willingness in state after state to give their unions the same legal rights as other married couples.”

Well said. More legislators need to follow your example on this issue and show support for equality and the President's courageous stance.

Does anyone even read the Bible anymore? Do they believe what they read? I'm thoroughly ashamed that this country's only Black president has taken this stand, against Gods word, and in reality against God.

It is embarassing when people, especially, African Americans, do not throughly read nor understand the facts. Obama talled about the law and the protection/union not religion. U see, as a community, we one our CIVIL RIGHTS battleon Human Rights, color or religion. Every true revolutionary knows this. Maybe Huey can shed some more light for u.
This was a speech given August 15 1970 by Huey Newton co-founder of the Black Panther Party..here he addresses the issue of Gay Rights… Its serious food for thought coming in the aftermath of President Obama endorsing Same-sex Message…During the past few years strong movements have developed among women and among homosexuals seeking their liberation. There has been some
uncertainty about how to relate to these movements.

Whatever your personal opinions and your insecurities about
homosexuality and the various liberation movements among homosexuals
and women (and I speak of the homosexuals and women as oppressed
groups), we should try to unite with them in a revolutionary fashion.
I say ” whatever your insecurities are” because as we very well know,
sometimes our first instinct is to...Read more @ http://hiphopandpolitics.wordpress.com/2012/05/11/looking-back-at-huey-newtons-thoughts-on-gay-rights-in-the-wake-of-obamas-endorsement/?year=2012&monthnum=05&day=11&like=1&_wpnonce=1b36c1000c&wpl_rand=be8f8752d2.
