According to initial reports, a deck collapsed at a home in the 700 block of Kennolia Dr. in Southwest Atlanta.

20 people were thought to be on the deck before it collapsed and 7 were sent to Grady Hospital for treatment.  What caused the deck to collapse is still under investigation.

According to the Georgia Chapter of the American Society of Home Inspectors, a wood deck will typically last 10 to 15 years.

Owners should check posts and beams for rot and examine all fasteners, bolts and joist hangers for rust and corrosion.

The group estimates thousands of decks in Metro Atlanta may be unsafe. -WSB
