Earth Day Events Around Our Community

Here's a look at a couple of activites in and around Cascade and southwest Atlanta that are being held in conjunction with Earth Day:

Atlanta City Council members, community residents along with volunteers from the University of Georgia, Trees Atlanta, Southeast Horticultural Society, and Atlanta Audubon Society aim to convert the four acres of old industrial property into an urban farm adjacent to the Adair Park neighborhood.

Participants will pick up litter, remove debris, and uproot invasive plants.  Once completed, the farm will include native species, brambles, berry bushes, and fruit trees.

Date: Saturday, April 21, 9 am-12 pm.

In celebration of Earth Day, Green for All is teaming up with Woodson Elementary School and Let’s Retrofit A Million on a community service project to honor the legacy of environmental and human rights activist, Wangari Maathai. 

On Saturday April 21, local elementary and college students will learn about sustainability and environmental activism by participating in Earth Day service projects including planting trees, installing energy-efficient light bulbs in classrooms and delivering free compact florescent light bulbs to residents of the Grove Park Community.

Featured speakers will discuss the importance of conservation, environmental stewardship, and energy conservation as well as the legacy that Maathai imparted through her work in Kenyan communities for which she was awarded the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize.
