(Updated) Postal Unions to Protest Cascade, West End Post Office Closings Today

U.S. postal workers across the city with protest proposed branch closings including the Herring Road and Oglethorpe Avenue locations in greater southwest Atlanta.

The American Postal Workers Union, the National Association of Letter Carriers, the National Postal Mail Handlers Union and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association plan a nationwide demonstration today to protest the proposed closing of as many as 3,653 post offices across the country.

Two southwest Atlanta post offices are on a possible closure list released this summer by the U.S. Postal Service:  The branch at 2414 Herring Rd., in Cascade Heights, and the one at 848 Oglethorpe Ave., in the West End. For a full list of the post offices on the list, see this news release posted on the Postal Service website.

According to a news bulletin from the American Postal Workers Union, postal workers will rally in every congressional district in the country Tuesday to build support for H.R. 1351, a bill introduced in the House by Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA).

“With the USPS’s dire financial situation making headlines, and a battle raging in Congress over what to do about it, postal workers must take action now,” said APWU President Cliff Guffey. “I urge APWU members to work with our brothers and sisters in the other postal unions to organize the rallies. We must let every U.S. representative know that we need their support.”

Half of the post offices should have been closed on the advent of the internet. Nothing but junk arrives in my mailbox, and I am sick of paying for letter carrier pensions. Buh-bye!

Laura, For those in the community that do not have the internet, the low working class and the elderly to name a few, what are they suppose to do? We need to strongly uphold the decision about our post offices, if we lose this fight it will be another death sentence for us to conduct official business for ourselves. When that time comes, let's set of business centers for ourselves. With postage, mailboxes, notary (much needed), faxes (much needed) , copiers (much needed) and internet access within these business centers. West End Print Shop is an excellent example, as well as, the Fed X business in the upper Cascade area in the Publix Shopping center are excellent examples. However, we are going to need more.

Another thought, Bank America moved out the Kroger Shopping Center. It's time for us to move our money out of their bank. You can't serve my community, but place an new one in Buckhead this week. Let's Permanetly Withdraw !!!

Post Offices are a vital communications link for those who do not have access to e-mail. another issue that Laura fails to address is that when closing decisions occur they fall more heavily on postal offices in the inner cities. So it is not just a social and economic issue it is also a racial issue. Anderson C. Williams

I agree with you Laura. The Post Office has failed to evolve into a business model that meets the needs of today's customer. Thanks to e-mail, online bill pay (many companies are now charging customers who want paper bills), online marketing and other advances in business, the post office became like K-Mart. Great concept but dated. Its unfortunate that many of these post offices have to close as it will put people out of work but ultimately, they cannot continue to run a business model that is failing. Government must get this spending under control, the taxpayers can't afford wasteful spending anymore.
