Providence Baptist Associate Minister Found Fatally Shot Monday at Cascade Road Accounting Office (Updated)

Body of Derek Moses, 56, found inside Moses & Co. Accounting offices about 10 a.m. Monday.

Associate pastor Derek Moses of Providence Missionary Baptist Church was found dead inside his Cascade Road accounting office Monday with multiple gunshot wounds to his body, according to Atlanta police.

Authorities say Moses, 56, was discovered by a co-worker Monday at Moses & Co. Accounting, 2009 Cascade Rd. Police told GADailyNews.com that the body was discovered shortly before 10 a.m. Monday.

Atlanta Police spokeswoman Kim Jones said in an e-mail report on the incident that, "it appears Moses suffered several gunshot wounds to the head."

Officer Jones said that Moses blue BMW was missing from the office location but found later in the day on Montreat Avenue and impounded by police.

Rev. Dr. Gerald Durley, senior pastor of Providence, told Fox5-Atlanta Monday that Moses was a devoted family man who also served as an accountant for several local churches.

Cascade residents were shocked to learn of the incident.

Moses had been involved with Providence Missionary Baptist Church since he was a teenager, Durley said.

Cascade Heights resident Dr. Booker Poe, a member of Providence since 1972, recalled that Moses received an MBA from Columbia University in New York City.

"He was a very nice man," Dr. Poe, a Cascade community pediatrician, said Tuesday. "I'm shocked."

Rev. Durley told Fox-5  that he last saw Moses on Friday night when he did his taxes.  He says Moses didn't show up for church on Sunday, but he didn't think anything of it because of the busy tax season.

Police say the investigation into Moses death is continuing, and they’re looking for witnesses who might know who may have wanted to do the victim harm. Police particularly want to talk to anyone who might have seen Moses' BMW leaving his office in the last few days.

Jones said there were no motives or suspects as of 6:58 a.m. Tuesday.

Always sad to hear this kind of news... Going to follow this to find out the motive behind the murder. It's going to be an ugly investigation; a lot of folks thought highly of Mr. Moses.

This is so sad. What would make someone commit such a horrendous crime? I shed tears for Mr Moses, his wife and children. I also shed tears for his church family at Providence as the Senior Pastor, Dr Durley, is my brother. I hope they catch that heartless beast and prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law.

Mr. Moses was highly thought of in the community and beyond. This is a horrible crime that has left a hole in my heart. Mr. Moses while not married, was a dedicated family man and dedicated to the community. He was a blessing to so many people, myself included. The killer will be caught. I pray to God and the courts prosecute him or her for this heartless crime.
