Red Cross Volunteer, 89, Just Wants to "Assist Those in Distress"

James Greason, the Assistant Captain of the county's Red Cross Disaster Action Team for 13 years, takes pride in getting up at 2 a.m. to comfort and assist families in distress after a fire.

Meet James Greason, an Atlanta native, a long-time Cascade Heights resident and Assistant Captain of the Fulton County Red Cross Disaster Action Team.

Since becoming a Red Cross volunteer in 1995, this miltary veteran and former United States postal worker has worked on some 900 teams serving families across the county displaced by fires.

Greason works wherever he is needed but his main site is the Red Cross sub-station, located on Herron Road on the back lot of Providence Missionary Baptist Church at Benjamin E. Mays and Beecher.

Spend a few minutes with this busy 89-year-old—a 1944 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School—and you will soon feel guilty about not giving more of your time to the community. Instead of sitting in a rocking chair, Greason is always on call, ready to jump out of bed and rush to the call of a fire.

Cascade Patch met with Greason recently to talk about the work of a Red Cross volunteer. Greason said any family hit by a fire is in need and he stressed that southwest Atlanta has very few volunteers currently dedicated time to The Red Cross. The Atlanta and Fulton County Red Cross needs volunteers from southwest Atlanta to respond to local calls, Greason said.
