Running for District 57, GA House of Representatives

Rep. Rashad Taylor held a press conference at the State Capitol today to show media the flyers that he claims were distributed to Southwest Atlanta neighborhoods over the last week.  Rashad Taylor said that he wants his opponent, Rep. Gardner to "denounce these flyers and tactics, and to hold anyone involved accountable."

Rep. Rashad Taylor is openly gay and is upset that someone is trying to use that fact against him in the Oakland City neighborhood.  He says that the flyer is "totally false."

Rep. Pat Gardner held a previously scheduled press event this afternoon where she denied having any involvement with the distribution of the flyers, and said she would "never take part in something like that."  Of her staff, she was adamant when she said that if she ever found out that someone on her staff had a part in something like this, "they would be gone!"

Both candidates will have their chance to talk directly to Cascade Patch readers in the days ahead.  In the weeks ahead we will also hold an Online Forum with candidates, so that you can ask questions directly to the candidate.

I'm a personal friend of State Rep. Pat Gardner's and have been for many years. She's a wonderful person without a mean bone in her body.

I talked with her this evening and she's shocked by the flyer and confirmed that she and her campaign had absolutely nothing to do with this political dirty trick. I never thought for a second that she might. It's simply not in her character.

Rep. Gardner has been a supporter of gay rights and an ally of Atlanta's gay community for longer than she's been elected. She has previously been endorsed by Georgia Equality, although the group has not made an endorsement in this campaign.

Pat Gardner has attended numerous monthly neighborhood meetings with her husband in Castleberry Hill and has also hosted a neighborhood meet and greet with her to talk about the issues of importance to us. The only time Mr. Taylor has shown up in Castleberry was to accost Pat in Paschal's parking lot to talk about a stupid flyer. Who truly cares about the neighborhoods in District 57?

I would also like to state that I am gay and I think Pat Gardner is an ally, intelligent, dedicated, and collaborative.
