Residents Hold Press Conference to Plead for the Media to Cover SW Atlanta Neighborhoods Fairly
NPU-T President called a press conference to educate the media about the the number of individual neighborhoods that make up SW Atlanta.
Claiborne White, the incoming 2013 NPU-T Presidents called a press conference on December 14th for the purpose of educating the media about the various neighborhoods and the individualism that there is in Southwest Atlanta. According to White, the media constantly covers stories in this large area, but instead of noting the neighborhood they only say Southwest Atlanta. Southwest Atlanta is composed of roughly 97 individual neighborhoods and covers roughly 33 sq. miles.
To him and other residents in attendance, by not naming the exact neighborhood of a crime or of an incident, and by just labeling this whole area as SW Atlanta, makes it seem like everything bad happens in this scary place called "SW Atlanta." White would rather the media state exactly where the crime/incident occurred, what neighborhood, what street, etc.
One resident voiced her opinion by saying that she believes, by not naming our neighborhoods in this area the media has taken away their identity and if a person has no identity, then no foul can be done.
It is important to note that only CBS News was in attendance from the major TV networks. A map was passed out, which was intended for reporters at all the TV stations so as to help them with their reporting when they find themselves in Southwest Atlanta.
Claiborne White urged residents to step up and let the new organizations know when reporters have it wrong.
