The Georgia District of Kiwanis Art and Music Showcase provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their talents in a competitive atmosphere.

Andrew Koonce is a 9th grader at Woodward Academy, a talented violinist, and a member (for the second year) of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. He is a violinist. This year, Andrew Koonce, a Fulton County resident- whose parents are members of the Metro Atlanta Kiwanis Club- was the First Prize winner of the $3,500 music scholarship. The Georgia District Kiwanis Foundation provided a total of $15,000 in Educational Scholarships - $7,500 in the Art Contest and $7,500 in the Music Contest. Cascade Patch has just learned that 7 Sandtown Middle School students have been selected to perform with the Rialto Jazz for Kids All-Star Big Band! Under the direction of Dr. Gordon Vernick -an accomplished author and musician, and head of Georgia State University Jazz Studies- the program accepts the most outstanding students from five of their partner APS and Fulton County middle schools (Jean Childs Young, Sandtown, Ridgeview, Inman, and Taylor Road). Chris Kelly was found unresponsive on May 1st in Atlanta.
One half of the famous duo, Kris Kross, was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at his home on Stoneleigh Drive shortly after 4:30 p.m. on May 1st. The exhibit features photographs, on loan from the Auburn Avenue Research Library, from as far back as the 1860s.
"Homecoming: African American Family History in Georgia" ends May 5 at Hammonds House Museum. The exhibit "documents and pays homage to an incredible achievement – the survival of kinship ties and family pride among black people through the horrific experience of slavery," Hammonds House writes on its website. "Up until 1978 when the project that collected these photographs was launched, there had been relatively little research on the African American family."

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Talent Development Program, which supports the musical development of young African-American and Latino students, will hold its annual Spring Recitals on Saturday, April 27, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. at Southwest Arts Center. The performances are free and open to the public. According to the Woodruff Center, "the free event will serve as a juried performance of every participant as well as a recruitment effort for the Talent Development Program."
