I am not a celebrity watcher although I have interviewed numerous "stars" during my career. Not star struck, I wonder how and when these Kardashian women first bombed into my life. It seems like they are everywhere – including on the room keys at the Mirage Hotel in Vegas.
What have any one of them done to be so famous? With the exception of their Olympic gold medal winning step-father Bruce Jenner, none of them seem to have done anything to warrant their in-your-face fame. However, they have somehow managed to extend their 15 minutes of fame into some strange American phenomenon where you either love them and are a part of their 13 million Twitter followers or you hate them for making so much out of nothing… can you say jealous?
I have never watched any of their shows, but apparently a lot of people do. Otherwise, they would have gone the way of other reality show “stars” like Jon and Kate Gosselin. However, as long as people watch their shows, buy their products, embrace their endorsements and clamor for details about their weddings, disagreements and babies the Kardashians will be able to keep making buckets of money off people who see them as proof that reasonably good looks, lots of drama and no shame can land them in the world of the rich and famous.
All of that said, aren’t I as bad as the family’s fans? I mean I am, after all, spending some of my time venting about a family of (mostly) women whose names start with a “K.” If I really didn’t care wouldn’t I just forget about them and all their money? Maybe it’s because I am a reasonably good looking woman whose name starts with a “K” and I wish I could morph myself into fame and make somewhere near the $65 million the Kardashians pulled in last year!
