A report on some of the most important Cascade area police and safety news stories of the week.A high speed chase left traffic snarled for hours on Arthur Lankford Parkway east of the Greenbriar Mall area, Monday afternoon. According to a WSB report, the chase began in Dekalb County and ended on Highway 166. Officers reported that the chase started after a police stop of the driver not wearing his seat belt. The chase ended when the driver hit a retaining wall traveling west on Highway 166. The driver was apprehended and taken to Grady Hospital for possible internal injuries. Traffic was backed up for hours due to accident.
The Dill Ave Grocery located at 647 Dill Ave. just east of the Crown of Life Baptist Church, was robbed early Saturday morning, according to Atlanta Police. The store clerk, Rais Uddin, survived the assault despite three fail gunshots around him. The gunman was able to take approximately $200 from the register along with an unknown number of lottery tickets. The suspect is described as a black male between 23 to 28 years of age, 5'8- 5'11, and 180-200 lbs. Police had to shoot and kill a mother for the safety of her child, according to a news release Monday by Atlanta Police Major Keith Meadows. Around 1:30 pm Monday, police responded to a call to 2387 Abner Place in the Carver Hills community, just north of the Cascade Patch area, for a "person injured" call. Upon their arrival, witness told the officers that an 8-year-old boy had been choked by his mother and thrown out the window. The family of Jonathan Derek Coleman has reported him as missing, according to Atlanta Police. Coleman was last seen on Thanksgiving Day at 1664 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., just west of Mozley Park. Coleman is 20 years old and was last seen wearing a black hoodie, blue jeans, and black tennis shoes. He is described as a black male, 5'7, and weighing 130 lbs. He has black hair and brown eyes. Alexis Williams was last seen at her home at 1456 Hawkins St. in NW Atlanta. Her father, Roger Williams, left the home with Alexis around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Alexis' mother describes her as wearing a pink, black, and white shirt, with pink tights, a pink fleece, and pink Dora shoes. Alexis is 2' tall and she weighs 40 lbs. She has black hair and brown eyes. Her father, Roger Williams, is described as a 50 years old black male, 6' tall, and approximate weight of 145 lbs. Neighbors poured into the streets and others into neighbors' homes this weekend to remember 65-year-old Carolyn Watson of the Venetian Hills community. The blind great grandmother survived a large oak tree crashing into her house at Wyland Road in the Venetian Hills Elementary School area on Wednesday, Oct. 27. But just a few weeks later, she succumbed to kidney failure while receiving dialysis on the morning of Friday, Nov. 11. Teen crimes, including murders, robberies, burglaries, and rapes seem to be a constant fixture within the streets of southwest Atlanta. Many of these crimes involve black males 18 years old or younger. Either, they are the victims or the perpetrators. Youth crime has been a concern for southwest Atlanta, according to a recent article in Cascade Patch and Atlanta police say much needed support is being provided in the community. A recent four-week operational sting in October—by the U.S. Marshals Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force Counter Gang Unit (SERFTF) and the Atlanta Police Department Gang Unit—led to the arrest of eight members of the "Raised on Cleveland" gang recently, according to authorities. A pedestrian was struck in front of 1301 Joseph E. Boone Blvd. after exiting a Marta bus late Friday, according to Atlanta Police. According to APD Officer Curtis Davenport, after exiting the rear side exit, the victim walked behind the bus to cross the street when he was struck by a 2005 Black Chevrolet Impala with tinted windows traveling west on Boone. The Impala—which was described as having possible front end body damage or damage to the windshield—fled the accident scene. At approximately 7:30 a.m., Saturday morning, Atlanta Police received a call in reference to a cyclist down on the freeway at I-20 west bound just east of the Lee Street exit. The motorcycle and the cyclist were lying in the emergency lane. The cyclist was unresponsive. The cyclist was transported to Grady Hospital with a head injury. Police are investigating a shooting and attempted carjacking that led to a crash and the death of two people, including a veteran 911 dispatcher. Nikita Thomas, 34, a mother of a 13-year-old son and a nine-year veteran 911 dispatcher for the Atlanta Police Department, died as she and her boyfriend tried to escape a carjacking Sunday evening. A man suspected of stealing a burgundy Pontiac led police through a high-speed chase that ended in a crash Thursday afternoon. According to witnesses, Deuntrey Allen,was traveling westbound down Merrill Avenue at a high rate of speed around 1 p.m. with a police officer following close behind. Another police officer traveling northbound down Oakland Drive collided with the stolen Pontiac causing minor injuries to the driver and a baby. According to friends and neighbors of the 28-year-old woman arrested this week in the "Sweepstakes" police raid, the car that belonged to the woman was burglarized after her arrest. Friends of Tiffiany Gallat told Cascade Patch that they went to the business at 2056-C Campbellton Rd., just east of Delowe Drive, on Thursday to help Gallat's father recover her gray Toyota Corrolla. When they arrived, however, they said they found someone had broken into the car. A brick was lying on the front seat of the car, they said, surrounded by glass. On Wednesday evening, Atlanta Police VICE Units conducted an undercover investigation into Sweepstakes, an Internet cafe located at 2056-C Campbellton Rd., just east of Delowe Drive. The investigation was launched after community complaints about illegal gambling at the location. Two undercover investigators went into the location and began playing computer games. After approximately one hour, the investigators were paid in cash for winning several games. Lt. Atlanta Police have released a missing persons advisory for a 24-year-old southwest Atlanta resident, according to APD spokeswoman Kim Jones. Danelle S. Hughes was last seen around 8:30 p.m. at 899 Parks St., near I-20 on Sept. 11, according to family members. Hughes is 5 feet 7 inches and she weighs approximately 220 lbs. The first phase of a comprehensive new city surveillance system is now up and running, providing the Atlanta Police Department an important new weapon in its crime-fighting arsenal. The APD’s Video Integration Center (VIC) is a key component of Operation Shield, an Atlanta Police Department and Atlanta Police Foundation partnership aimed at linking communications between the APD, private security forces, and other local law enforcement agencies. Members of southwest Atlanta's faith and civil rights communities joined demonstrators Monday outside the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles' headquarters to stand in solidarity for the clemency of Troy Davis. The demonstration was in response to a hearing held by the 5-member board to decide the fate of Davis. Davis was convicted in 1991 for the murder of a Savannah police officer, Mark Allen MacPhail in 1989. Moviegoers witnessed more than they paid for at Movies ATL in the Camp Creek Marketplace district Thursday evening. According to Atlanta Police Department spokesman John Chaffe, an off-duty officer patroling the area witnessed a pedestrian robbery in progress on the southside of the parking lot of the theater, at 3760 Princeton Lakes Pkwy. The Atlanta Police Department and the Atlanta Bar Association will host the 11th Annual Legal Runaround 5k this Saturday, according to APD Public Affairs Manager Carlos Campos. The race is this Saturday, Sept. 10, in Piedmont Park. Registration begins at 7:30 and the race begins at 8:30 a.m. The race raises money for the Atlanta Bar Foundation’s Police Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to the children of Atlanta police officers killed or disabled in the line of duty.
