Dance and music enthusiasts of all ages had a chance to move to live music this past Saturday at the 2011 Spirit Dance Summer Festival in the Historic West End. The festival, at the Omenala African Griot Museum, 337 Dargan Place, included the music of the cosmic rock and soul band, Black Rose. The Atlanta-based Black Rose had participants rising up from their chairs and moving to their innovative soul, rock, punk, funk sound. Here is the story, presented visually.
Amateur artists, writers, dancers and yogis engaged in a range of ciy-sponsored art labs this past weekend at the West End Performing Arts Center, 945 Ralph David Abernathy. The labs, which were run by Gebsite, gave participants the chance to create, participate and integrate their artistic talents in a peaceful group setting. The artist-led labs, or teaching sessions, were provided in dance, yoga, writing and visual art. The event was supported by the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs. The West Atlanta Watershed Alliance (WAWA), Bioponica, REI and Radio Disney came together Saturday for a multi-faceted green "Nature in Your Neighborhood Festival" at southwest Atlanta's Outdoor Activity Center. Activities at the center, 1442 Richland Rd., included the National Wildlife Federation's first Great American Backyard Campout, mini workshops on sustainable gardening and introduction of the Biogarden, an organic incubator designed by Bioponica of Atlanta. A time of celebrating the life of one of our great leaders was at hand at the 22nd Annual Malcolm X Festival on Sat., May 21, in the West End Park, 1111 Oak St. The Malcolm X festival was an opportunity to express feelings of remembrance for one who gave his life for equality. Julie Dexter, Mausiki Scales and the Common Ground Collective, and Star Chile along with many others performed. The Spelman and BVSGA Meat Out—billed as the world's largest grassroots diet education campaign—was part of a global effort of activists in all 50 states and two dozen other countries to expose an estimated 35,000 people around the world to vegan food.
Thousands of worshipers celebrated Easter across southwest Atlanta on Sunday at pre-dawn vigils, sunrise services, children's pageants, praise services and festive homecomings. Environmentalists and supporters of The West Atlanta Watershed Alliance (WAWA) gathered in southwest Atlanta this past weekend to celebrate the 2011 Urban Forestry Festival. The April 2 festival at the Outdoor Activity Center, 1442 Richland Rd., consisted of vendors with solutions to help the community and the environment.
