ATLANTA (Oct. 21, 2011) – Steve Stoute, CEO & Founder of lead brand marketing firm Translation and author of The Tanning of America: How Hip Hop Created a Culture That Rewrote the Rules of the New Economy joins Spelman College President Beverly Daniel Tatum, Ph.D., for a discussion titled “Marketing: The New Reality” on October 28, 2011 at 11 a.m. Free and open to the public, the event will be held in the Cosby Academic Center Auditorium.
The conversation between Dr. Tatum and Stoute will center on his book which teaches corporate America how to understand today’s newest consumer – The Tan Generation. Stoute describes this demographic as multi-ethnic consumers whose buying habits reflect a mindset, rather than a race or age. His visit is part of the President’s conversation series “Innovation and the New Economy: Where do Black women fit?” which brings thought leaders to the College to discuss the vital role of innovation in today’s challenging economy.
Books will be available for purchase starting at 10:30 a.m. in the Cosby Lobby and Stoute will sign copies of the book immediately following the event.
Stoute has helped create some of today’s most innovative marketing campaigns for brands such as McDonald’s, State Farm, Target, Estee Lauder, Budweiser, Wrigley, Microsoft and Coca-Cola by pairing them with some of the biggest pop culture icons such as Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige, Justin Timberlake, Lebron James, Gwen Stefani, Will Smith, Beyonce and Jay-Z.
In 2005, Stoute partnered with Carol’s Daughter founder Lisa Price to take the brand from a single-store operation to a multi-million dollar beauty empire with over 1,000 points of distribution. Because of Stoute’s initiative, Carol’s Daughter now lists Will Smith, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Jimmy Iovine, Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige among its leading investors.
In 2008, Stoute partnered with Jay-Z to co-found Translation Advertising. Prior to Translation, he served as an executive at Interscope Geffen A&M Records, where he was president of the urban music division and produced albums by a wide range of artists including U2, Eminem and Limp Bizkit. He was also President of urban music for Sony Music Entertainment and helped launch the careers of Mariah Carey, Will Smith and Nas.
