2014 “Teens of Excellence” Prom Closet Program Needs Formalwear Donations for Male and Female Teens

Applicants for formal wear must attend educational workshops

The Housing Authority of Fulton County (HAFC) and the Resident Advisory Board (RAB) want donations of formal wear and accessories for the Fifth Annual “Teens of Excellence” Prom Closet Program.  HAFC is seeking donations of gently used and clean prom/formal dresses and tuxedoes of all sizes for high school seniors graduating in May 2014.  Donations of larger size formal wear are especially needed. The program seeks to help single parents, grandparents and/or guardians on fixed incomes to provide prom wear without the disappointing choice of saying no to a teen about purchasing formalwear because of limited income.

The formal wear is provided to high school seniors, with priority given to Housing Authority of Fulton County residents.  In 2013, more than 250 high school seniors in Fulton County received donated formal clothing to wear to their proms.

As in previous years, items needed for the 2014 Prom Closet include:

•         Formal dresses (gently used) and shoes
•         Tuxedos and shoes
•         Accessories (bracelets, necklaces, earrings, etc.)
•         Handbags

Citizens can drop off formal wear and accessories now through Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at the HAFC located at 4273 Wendell Drive, Atlanta, GA 30336.  The Prom Dress Giveaway is scheduled for Saturday, May 3, 2014, from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the HAFC.

In return for the donated formal wear, each teen is required to attend awareness workshops.  Workshop choices include self-esteem, leadership development, prom night safety, proper etiquette, goal setting, career building, unleashing your talent, applying for scholarships and steps for the proper completion of financial aid forms.

To participate, all applicants must meet the following requirements:

•         High School Senior
•         Graduating in May 2014
•         Provide school identification
•         Provide a high school transcript

To register, applicants must contact Iris Conners at 404-588-4972 or email iconners@hafc.org.  The transcript and school identification must be available at the time of registration.
