Community Corner

It’s About Time!

Tuesday, November 5th is Election Day!  Registered voters will go to the polls to select individuals charged with leadership responsibilities within our communities.

One of the “hot topics” this year is the race for Atlanta School Board.  Over the course of several years, Atlanta has been in the news and garnered unfortunate attention as it pertains to the quality and integrity of the educative process within APS.

Mrs. Constance Smalls, a longtime Atlanta resident and mother, agrees that it’s about time to get out the vote, especially for the election of school board officials.  According to Mrs. Smalls, “The future of our children is in trouble; and it’s up to us to save them.”

Mrs. Smalls has made the decision to support Dr. Dell Byrd, a successful former educator in the Fulton County School system.  She agrees it will take caring, non-politic-driven sensitivity to turn the situation around.  She feels Dr. Byrd is the one to make it happen for District 6, along with other individuals elected from other districts which comprise the school board.

Dr. Byrd has run an energetic and visible campaign and has great plans in raising the level of effectiveness of the board as well as increasing the dismal graduation rate within APS which is now at 50%.  She is a Curriculum Specialist therefore the process of identifying and governing educational policies which merit implementation is a valuable skill set she brings to the table.

Mrs. Small and many other citizens are hopeful that Dr. Byrd will realize victory on Election Day.  She feels election of a celebrated educator will help Atlanta’s children to emerge as victors in academic achievement.  “We can’t let these children down!  Who knows better than an excellent teacher who is willing to get the job done?  Dr. Byrd gets my vote!”
