Will Winter Storm Miss Atlanta?

Snow and sleet accumulations of a half inch to 2 inches are possible in Fulton County according to the National Weather Service.

UPDATE 8:30 A.M.: The National Weather Service forecast says to expect snow in City of Atlanta after 11 a.m., with 1-2 inches possible. Snow is likely tonight before 1 a.m., but with less than an inch of accumulation. By Saturday when the high is 60, there won't even be a trace of today's storm.

As another winter storm threatens the metro area, Atlanta Public Schools announced late Monday afternoon that officials are monitoring the weather.

The Fulton County School System has already cancelled all athletic and extracurricular activities scheduled for Tuesday. Check back with Patch as we follow the forecasts for this immediate area and how it affects schools, businesses and road conditions.

Here's the NWS timeline for what metro Atlanta can expect:

  • Tuesday: Snow and sleet likely before 2 p.m. changing to snow with a high near 28. Wind gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation 80 percent. Snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
  • Tuesday night: Snow mainly before 1 a.m with a low around 18. Wind gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation 80 percent. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
  • Wednesday: A 10 percent chance of snow before 7 a.m., then mostly sunny with a high near 37. Wind gusts as high as 20 mph.

The NWS warns that the weather may have a significant impact on roads, stating "snow and ice covered roads will make travel difficult or impossible Tuesday night into Wednesday."
