The Spelman Independent Scholars Program Celebrates Elders with Performance by Senior Dance Ensemble

The Spelman Independent Scholars Program (SIS-in-LEADS) hosts the East Point senior dance ensemble Edeliegba in “Celebrating Elders,” a recital blending dance, song and spoken word.

Edeliegba is comprised of women and men ranging in age from 60 to 83 years old who were engaged in various professions before retirement. The ensemble will perform a variety of tap, jazz, modern and African dances. Following the formal program, the ensemble will gather with audience members for a community dance in the Cosby Center lobby.

The SIS-in-LEADS Oral History Project prepares Spelman students to be age-sensitive leaders. Through performance art, this event will bring together several generations to challenge assumptions about age and “open the lens” about elders.

Edeliegba, translated from Nigerian/Hausa, means, “The elders have gathered in completion.”

The performance will be held in Cosby Academic Center. The event is free and open to the public.
