Tri-Cities High School VPA Magnet Program Presents “The Color Purple”

EAST POINT, GA - The Tri Cities High School Visual & Performing Arts Magnet Program, (TCHS VPA) presents Alice Walker's "The Color Purple". Chosen as the first high school in the nation to perform the hit Broadway musical, which originally opened in December 2005, TCHS will run the show at the Viola Turner Theater.

Published in 1982, the epic tale presents the story of Celie, a Black woman in the South sold by her father into servitude to an abusive husband. Celie writes letters to God in which she tells about her life as a daughter, wife, sister, and mother. A revealing triumph of self discovery, the story spans over a period of forty years during which Celie meets a series of other Black women who help to shape her: Nettie, Celie's sister, who becomes a missionary teacher in West Africa; Shug Avery, a Blues singer her husband who she refers to as Mister, is in love with, and who becomes Celie's salvation; Sofia, the strong-willed daughter-in-law whose strength and courage inspire Celie; and Squeak, who goes through awakenings of her own.

The production will feature the combined talents of the nearly 100 students of Drama, Orchestra, Art, Band, Chorus, and Dance adding their own blend of rhythm, blues, and jazz to the Pulitzer Prize winning show. “We are absolutely elated at being chosen to have rights to bring a show of this magnitude to the community,” said Robert Conner, Director of Drama. The TCHS VPA has produced several Broadway shows such as West Side Story, Once on this Island, and Dream Girls. “Our students are honored to have the opportunity to perform in yet another major production.” said TCHS Magnet Director, Tony Loadholt.
