Full Gospel Baptist Church Conference in Full Swing This Week

Pastor, gospel music artist Marvin Sapp headlines tonight; Presiding Bishop is Hurricane Katrina transplant Bishop Paul Morton of Southwest Atlanta's Changing a Generation FGBC.

Paul S. Morton of Changing A Generation Ministries in southwest Atlanta, brought a crowd of over 500 worshippers to their feet at Pittman Park Saturday in the Pittsburgh community after singing "Open the Flood Gates of Heaven: Let It Rain."

Morton, a grammy award-winning performer, is not just a pastor and gospel music vocalist. He is the presiding bishop of the 2011 Annual Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship International Conference this week at the Georgia World Congress Center.

The conference, which began with the Saturday event, runs through Friday evening. Online registration has ended but onsight registration is available starting at 3 p.m. today at the Georgia World Congress Center (see conference website for details).

"I am proud of what this type event brings to the community," long-time community organizer Douglas Dean, of Summerhill Neighborhood Inc., said Saturday. "It is absolutely beautiful."

With its roots in New Orleans, Changing A Generation Full Gospel Baptist Church was established in Atlanta following Hurricane Katrina. Bishop Morton relocated the historic Greater St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church to the current location, 3350 Greenbriar Pkwy., following the storm that submerged New Orleans.

Now, with "One Church in Two States," Bishop Morton serves as senior pastor, with his wife and co-pastor, Dr. Debra B. Morton.

Other performers on Saturday included Brother West Morgan singing crowd pleasing tunes such as, "I Don't Believe He Brought Me thus Far to Leave Me" and  "I Feel the Anointing in this Place" and the Rev. Norman Hutchins sung "Now I Know."
