Arnika Dawkins Gallery, located at 4600 Cascade Road, is currently in the middle of exhibiting a unique a solo exhibition; Chester Higgins: Unseen Spirit. This exhibition is said to be a stunning retrospective of portraits by the former New York Times Staff Photographer.

Chester Higgins: Unseen Spirit conveys a spirit of humanity that is palpable. Images of young and old, confront the viewer with pensive thought and joyful prose. These images speak to humanity about the internal human condition. The images are uncompromising and give us a glimpse into the reflections of the subjects.

As a Staff Photographer for the New York Times, Higgins has traveled the world capturing images that stir the soul.  Over the past five decades, he has produced a compelling assemblage of images that reflects a sensitive and in-depth journal of his explorations of the human Diaspora and his concern with his own humanity. 

"The portrait, for me, highlights what is visually apparent. Yet, I’m interested in more than what meets the eye. What I find most interesting is the spirit within. It is this spirit that I try to recognize and render. I seek to produce a photograph that presents the obvious, sometimes the ordinary, but goes further to reveal what’s hidden and makes the subject extraordinary." - Chester Higgins

According to Arnika Dawkins Gallery, "Higgins is the recipient of grants from the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the International Center of Photography, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Andy Warhol Foundation.
