On a Tuesday evening in late May 2012, a standing room only crowd packed into the on Cascade Road to see a very rare treat up-close and personal.
It is not widely known that one of the great treasures of African-American art and art in general, lies right here on Cascade Rd. Jacob Lawrence is the preeminent black artist of the 20th century, and we are lucky to live so close to such a collection that Southwest Library now owns and proudly displays.
The John Brown Series is a collection of paintings depicting the life, triumph, and death of abolitionist John Brown. The colors and the style of the work shows off Jacob Lawrence's brilliance and vision, at the same time as it educates the viewer about a subject that is hardly discussed;White abolitionist helping to fight against slavery.
Individuals and families need only to walk into the library to see this work. I encourage all of our readers to just stop by your local library and say hello and see what treasures are right here hanging on the walls.
ps- They have air condition, so this could be a great summer outing!
