'The Rooting Place' Play holds a Reading and Discussion at SW Arts Center

The Rooting Place, a tragicomedy about family ties broken, to be discussed on Thursday.

Playwright Betty Chaney and her son Mahdi invite you to journey with them to rural Mississippi to The Rooting Place, a tragicomedy about family ties broken by distance, love, pain, and, most importantly, lies.  Thursday night at 7 p.m. inside the , people will gather to partake in a reading and discussion of the new play.

Set in 1985, the protagonist Effie Raye returns to her grandmother’s home after 30 years, bringing her daughter Simone and her two-month-old grandson with her.  Although Raye spent every summer with her grandmother when she was growing up, something happened the summer she was 16, and she never came back. 

Now, upon her return, four generations of mothers will be together for the first time.  But, it will not be a happy reunion.   Raye soon learns that her mother still hates her and does not want her there.  Also, shortly after they arrive, Simone learns a shocking secret that makes her turn on her mother.
