Arrest Made in AUC Slaying that Killed 1 Morehouse Student

Atlanta Police has reported Thursday afternoon that they made an arrest in the June 13th murder of a Morehouse student as he and a friend sat in their cars on the AUC campus.

According to Officer John Chafee, "On 6-18-2013 Atlanta Police Homicide Investigators were able to secure an arrest warrant for Mr. Nicolas Ross Smith, age 20, charging him with murder in the death of 23 year old Joe Gibbs."

Nicolas Smith was subsequently arrested today, June 20th, by the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force and transported to Fulton County Jail.  He is charged with Assault w/ a Deadly Weapon and with Homicide.

APD officer Chafee told Fox 5 News that by their investigation, "it appears the shooting was in relation to some type of drug transaction between the victim and the suspects."  The Gibbs family was shocked to hear of the drug relation.

The victim Joey Gibbs is from Los Angeles, and his family continues to prepare for his burial.

A second arrest is imminent, and a warrant has been put out for the 2nd suspect's arrest.  Police refuse to identify him until he is captured.

Below is the information directly from APD about the original crime that took place on June 13th:
On 6-13-2013 around 6:30pm officers responded to a person shot call in the area of Parsons St and Webster St in Southwest Atlanta. Upon arrival officers found a motor vehicle accident and found the driver, who appeared to be in his early to mid twenties, appeared to have been shot multiple times and was deceased on scene. A second occupant of the vehicle sustained a gunshot wound to the hand and is in stable condition at Grady Hospital. Witnesses reported a possible third occupant that left the scene on foot and may have been injured. The preliminary investigation indicates that a suspect approached and fired multiple times into the victim's vehicle before fleeing the scene in a separate vehicle. Atlanta Police Homicide Investigators responded to the scene and are investigating this shooting.
The Atlanta Police Department’s Homicide Unit is conducting a thorough investigation of this incident in order to bring the perpetrators to justice. At this time, the preliminary investigation appears to indicate that the victims were targeted, and this was not a random incident. Further details will be withheld in the interest of preserving the integrity of the investigation.
