Atlanta City Council To Honor Monica Pearson

With this Atlanta news icon retiring, it's time to share your favorite Monica memories with Cascade Patch.


The Atlanta City Council is honoring veteran news anchor Monica Pearson with a reception and proclamation on Monday, February 20, 2012 at Atlanta City Hall.

A reception will take place at 12 noon in the southwest atrium, 2nd floor adjacent to the Atlanta City Council Chamber. The proclamation presentation will take place at 1 p.m. in the Council Chamber.

Pearson, anchor for Channel 2 Action News, recently announced her plans to retire at the end of July after 37 years with the station. Her last day anchoring the 4 and 6 p.m. news will be Wednesday, July 25, 2012.

“Monica is an Atlanta icon,” said Atlanta City Councilman Michael Julian Bond. “For more than three decades Atlantans have admired her journalistic integrity and trustworthiness. We are humbled that one of her first assignments at Channel 2 was as a City Hall reporter.  We wish her all the best in her future endeavors. For Atlanta, there will never quite be another Monica Pearson.”

In a recent interview, Pearson herself replied, “Covering President Jimmy Carter’s acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize; reporting on President Obama’s inauguration; interviewing Daddy King, Maynard Jackson and Andrew Young ... There have been so many moments over 37 years that it's easy and hard to tick them off.”
