Late Night Storms Wreak Havoc Throughout SW Atlanta - More to Come?

Multiple complaints of trees down and flash flood warnings occurred on Wednesday night.


Heavy rains battered metro Atlanta for a few hours on Wednesday evening leaving behind a number of trees down and at least once case of flash flooding in which an elderly woman had to be rescued.

According to 11Alive.com, "Metropolitan Parkway at Perkerson Road in southwest Atlanta was closed due to flooding and motorists are stranded in the flooded waters." Video from the scene shows that water was up to the level of the car doors, and that emergency crews had to help some motorists.

There was another case of flash flooding reported by Fox 5, who said that,a woman needed to be rescued by boat in southwest Atlanta. "Gladys White lives on Macon Drive next to the South River in southwest Atlanta. The river rapidly rose around 9 p.m., trapping the 61-year-old woman, who is in a wheelchair," reported Fox 5.

White called for help. The Atlanta Fire Department showed up with the Swift Water Rescue Team and got her out.

At the height of last night's storms Georgia Power said that at least 4700 customers in metro Atlanta were without power.

Trees down were reported included, "a fallen tree on the 1400 block of Byrere Terrace in southwest Atlanta, and a tree on a truck near a vacant home on the 900 block of Gaston Street in southwest Atlanta." 

CBS Atlanta was on Cascade Avenue when crews began working on clearing the road due to a fallen tree.  According to CBS, "another tree fell onto Cascade Avenue at Pineview Terrace. Authorities removed it overnight and reopened the street."
