American sign language social. This new social hour and book club is designed for hearing-impaired individuals and anyone wishing to practice and use American Sign Language. 6 p.m. Tuesday at Southwest Branch Library, 3665 Cascade Rd SW, Atlanta. Free.

NPU gathering. An informal gathering of residents and stakeholders of Neighborhood Planning Unit R will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the S&S Cafeteria, 2002 Campbellton Road SW. Free entry.

Author talk. Velma Maia Thomas will discuss From Slave Ship Wanderer to United States Colored Troops: The Life of Private Charles Carr, at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Shrine of the Black Madonna Cultural Center and Bookstore, 946 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd. SW, Atlanta. Free admission.

Senior bridge club. Meets at noon every Thursday at the Adamsville Recreation Center at 3201 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW.
