Today is Rosa Parks’ 100th Birthday Celebration at The King Center

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Ala., city bus.

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference and its leadership, along with a myriad of other premier Civil Rights organizations and leaders will be present to pay tribute to the legendary Ms. Rosa Parks.

“Mrs. Parks was not just known for sitting down on that Montgomery bus. She was
also known for working with children. She had the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute in Atlanta, where over 500 young people have been touched by Mrs. Parks through participating in the program,” says Brenda Davenport, Founder and Coordinator of the Rosa Parks Centennial Tribute Committee.

The 100th birthday celebration of Civil Rights leader Ms. Rosa Parks will take place on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, 1:00pm, at the King Center (449 Auburn Ave., Atlanta 30303).

“All the great women of the civil rights movement are coming to proudly honor one of their own – the first ‘shero’, of the struggle for racial justice,” says Margaret Muhammad, the Rosa Parks Committee Co-Chair. “Rosa Parks is the Mother of the Movement!”

In addition, the US Postal Service is honoring the legendary 'shero' with a brand-new stamp!  The U.S. Postal Service 2013 Rosa Parks (Forever®) stamp honors the life of this extraordinary American activist who became an iconic figure in the civil rights movement.

The Black Heritage Stamp Series is a collection of stamps commemorating the
accomplishments and contributions of African Americans throughout American
history. Their acclaimed societal, political, and cultural undertakings are extolled
through this series. The Black Heritage series began in 1978 with a stamp that
honored American abolitionist Harriet Tubman. Each fall, the honoree for the
following year is announced.
