Alisha Thomas Morgan Denounces the NEA's Call for U.S. Education Secretary Duncan to Resign

State Representative and State School Superintendent Candidate Alisha Thomas Morgan (D-Austell) has called on her opponent, Valarie Wilson, to denounce the National Education Association’s (NEA) call for U.S. Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan to resign. Wilson is supported by the local and national arms of the union calling for the secretary’s resignation.

“I am disappointed, but not surprised, that this organization that is supposed to represent the views of educators has passed a resolution calling for the resignation of President Obama’s Secretary of Education,” said Rep. Morgan. “The U.S. Department of Education has led some of the most important reforms in education, spurring innovation, and has invested unprecedented dollars into public education – particularly here in Georgia.”

Alisha Thomas Morgan was tapped to serve as an advisor to the U.S. Department of Education and she has spent 12 years as a state legislator fighting for Georgia’s children.

“Mrs. Wilson should demonstrate her commitment to children and stand up to her special-interest supporters when they are wrong about our President and his policies,” said Rep. Morgan. “I am proud to have been selected by Secretary Duncan to work to improve public education by reviewing grant applications for Race to the Top and Promise Neighborhoods. As State School Superintendent, I look forward to having a productive relationship with the Obama Administration and the U.S. Department of Education.”

Alisha Thomas Morgan and Valarie Wilson are in a runoff election on July 22 for state school superintendent of Georgia.
