Atwood Community Gardens & Urban Farm Park Hosts 2nd Annual National Food Day Celebration
Atwood Community Gardens & Urban Farm Park is celebrating
our 2nd Annual National Food Day Community Dinner. We will have vendors,
games, entertainment and plenty of space for guests to sit back, relax
and enjoy the wonderful and welcoming atmosphere.
Last October 24th, Mayor Reed visited Atwood for the first time to
hold a press conference and officially launch National Food Day in
Atlanta. He asked, "Why didn't I know about this place? It's so close
to my office Downtown! I'm going to pledge $6,500 to help make Atwood
even better." And he did! Since his visit, we have added more seating
and other amenities to help visitors and guests enjoy their parties,
special events or simple walks through Atwood's gardens and farm. To
date, we have hosted well over 3,000 volunteers, hosted scores of
community, corporate and church group activities, and raised over
$250,000 in donations, volunteer labor, equipment and supplies.
Atwood's National Food Day will honor and celebrate the local farmers
that sell at the SWOOM Outdoor Farmer's Market every Thursday from
4-8pm. SWOOM has been instrumental in providing fresh fruits and
vegetables to Southwest Atlanta residents as well as low-income EBT card
holders (thanks to the Wholesome Wave Double Benefits Program). This
year's National Food Day activities will feature a variety of chefs and
culinary artists, dish samples, gardening classes, guest speakers,
entertainers and discovery activities for kids and families (i.e.,
learning about worms and how to harvest, carve and cook a pumpkin).
