Kipp WAYS Marks 'Demiya Day' with Family Members 1 Year After Students Death

Family To Attend "Demiya Day" At Kipp WAYS Academy, and Visit the Graveside

The following is an article/announcement from S.E. Regional News and Carrie L. Williams.

Today, Monday, September 23, 2013, the Shatikey and Demiya Griffin family are inviting the public to commemorate with them the one-year mark of the murders of Shatikey (age 34) and Demiya (age 12) Griffin.

Starting at 7:45am at Kipp WAYS Academy (350 Temple St. NW, Atlanta 30314) – the school Demiya Griffin attended – the family attended a special assembly to begin “Demiya Day” at Kipp WAYS.

In the evening at 5:00pm, the Griffin family will gather at the graveside of Shatikey, Demiya, and their father/grandfather Thaddeus Griffin in the Westview Cemetery (1680 Westview Dr., Atlanta 30310).

The family is sharing this commemoration with the public, to highlight the need for predatory violence prevention legislation.  “Out of this family’s courage, they are taking actions to ensure no other family suffers what they have suffered,” shares Griffin family Spokesperson Al Bartell.

The Griffin family is in communication with state legislators to have the Georgia General Assembly pass the Shatikey and Demiya Predatory Violence Prevention Act in the upcoming 2014 Legislative Session.

“This goes beyond my mother and my sister,” explains Shatikey’s son DeArious Floyd (age 17). “We’re wanting this law to help prevent this from happening to another family.  That’s why it’s a prevention act.”
