Thanksgiving Facts: 1 of 5 Will Shop After Dinner, Gen Y Dislikes Turkey, and More

Weird Thanksgiving Facts & Figures

Tada.com, a company that offers deals and coupons from more than five thousand retailers, recently published and fun and interesting infographic full of facts about people's Thanksgiving habits. Take a look at the weird facts they came up with by following the link or reading through the information below.  According to TADA, they "polled 4,509 shoppers immediately after they checked out from 1,040 online retailers."

Fears that Thanksgiving day is being subsumed by Black Friday seem to be merited: We polled 4,509 online shoppers immediately after they checked out from 1,040 retailers, and 10% admit they'll be heading out to stores for pre-Black Friday deals, while 8% will be heading online to shop (31% of Gen Y will be shopping). It's not all bad news for the family-centric holiday, though, as 42% list visiting with friends and family as their post-meal priority. Football seems to be another American tradition with staying power: While 27% of the general public will watch, those with HHI of 150k+ are even more inclined to tune into a game (45%).

Meanwhile, there’s waning interest in turkey amongst the younger demographic—and little to no appetite for cranberries. While Seniors ranked cranberries as their fourth favorite Thanksgiving food after turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing, they came in dead last for Generation Y at 9th place. And Generation Y was the only age group to put turkey in second place; what’s more, 10% said they don’t plan to eat turkey at all. Perhaps the traditional Thanksgiving meal will do some significant shape-shifting in the coming years. Or maybe a taste for cranberries comes with age.

Roasted turkey takes top honors, but more and more alternative ways to prepare the bird are surfacing, including deep frying, smoking, barbecuing, and even dyeing it blue. To-furkey is most popular with Gen Y.
