Blog Post: Why Working Out Sucks

Exercise is hard work, no doubt, but there are some surprising benefits that may keep you motivated.

So, I’ve been in the fitness industry for eight years now. If you include my time with the NBA and as a high school basketball coach, that’s more than a decade that I’ve been involved with wellness on some level. During that time there’s one thing that sticks out about the commentary I’ve heard about working out.

At first, it sucks.

It hurts. It’s tiring. It’s uncomfortable. There’s too much sweat. (What am I going to do with my hair?) There’s no time for it. Wouldn’t it be easier, quicker and dare I say, BETTER, to just have surgery to improve the body?

Um, no.

Look at it this way; exercise is like dating. At the beginning, the benefits are elusive. You aren’t quite sure if your efforts are getting you anywhere. There’s some heartbreak. (What do you mean I’ve only lost ONE pound?!)  There’s some pain. (Epsom salt and Bio Freeze step in to ease your sadness.)

Then, one magical day, after a little determination and persistence, you experience the first rush of endorphins (biochemical love) and all is right with the world. In fact, the euphoric feeling that one can experience post workout is clinically proven to be as powerful as morphine or Zoloft.

After that moment, nothing is the same. You start to fall in love with the way you feel, the way you look, the way you sleep like a rock at night. Sure, the workouts themselves remain challenging if you’re doing the right kind of exercise (next blog), but your mindset is different. You realize that hard work DOES pay off and in the case of exercise, BIG TIME. Before you know it, your cholesterol is lower, your stress has eased, sex is better (Yes sir!) and the pain in your back is, well, not so painful.

Working out sucks at first because it’s hard. Change always is. Only persistence and desire will get you through the tough time. How bad do you want it?
