Homegoing Services Held for Mamie Lee Minor, Civil Rights Activist

This is in tribute to my beautiful and loving mother, Mamie Minor, who went home to be with God on Sunday, May 22. A beautiful homegoing celebration was held in her honor on Sat., May 28, at Murray Brother's Funeral Home, 1199 Utoy Springs Rd. 

The services were officiated by Dr. Emmanuel McCall, Pastor Emeritus of Fellowship Grove Baptist Church. The internment took place at Westview Cementery, 1680 Ralph David Abernatthy.

Obituary:

Mamie Lee Anderson Minor was born on August 5, 1927, to the late Ruby Thomas Anderson and Henry Anderson in Rayle, Wilkes County, Ga. She was the third of five children. Three siblings have preceded her in death. They include her youngest sister, Ruthie Dell Anderson Brewer, her youngest brother, John Paul Anderson, and her eldest brother, Jimmie Lou Anderson. She has one surviving sister, Henrietta Anderson Butler.

Mamie accepted the Lord at an early age. She was a faithful member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Rayle, Ga. When she moved to Atlanta, she became a faithful and dedicated servant of Union Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend J.A. Wilborn for over thirty years.

In 1991, she joined Christian Fellowship Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Emmanuel McCall, Sr. she was a dedicated and active member in the WMU, the Adult Usher Board, the Senior Ministry, and Deacon Ministry #33.

Mamie attended Booker T. Washington High School and Morris Brown College. She served in many career capacities including being a teacher in Wilkes County, a stock clerk a Rich’s downtown for eighteen years, and a nursing assistant for over ten years. Also. she was a licensed Master Cosmetologist.

Mrs. Minor was active in the civil rights movement. She marched and protested with Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Rev. Hosea Williams.  She supported desegregating the Woolworth's  cafe counters and the Magnolia Room at Downtown Rich's in Atlanta. 

In her later years, she  was active with SEIU-AFL CIO in obtaining substantial pay and insurance for organized labor members. Her name is inscribed on a civil rights monuement in Birmingham, Ala.

Mamie married the late James Theodore Minor in 1956. To their union, they leave one daughter, Yolande Maria Minor.

Mrs. Mamie Lee Anderson Minor entered eternal rest on Sun., May 22, 2011. She leaves to cherish her memories one daughter, Dr. Yolande Maria Minor; one sister, Mrs. Henrietta Anderson Butler; also, she leaves much love, hope and appreciation to four nieces, Ms. Ruby Carol Brewer, Ms. Vickey Dazett Brewer, Ms. Michelle La Rue Allen and Dr. Vickey Lynn Crawford; one nephew, Mr. Michael Edwin Milner; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Catherine Minor Allen, Mrs. Ruth Minor Crawford and Mrs. Mary Owens Anderson; one brother-in-law, Mr. Daniel Alonzo Allen Jr.; friends and family.
