Frugal Family: Summer Break Savings in the City

For those choosing a "staycation" in Atlanta for the summer break, there are tons of affordable and fun activities for the entire family.

While there may have been moans and groans in your home this week, due to the end of spring break, the upside is that summer is right around the corner. 

Looking to save a buck and give your wallet a big break during the Hotlanta summer months?  Below are Frugal Family summer savings in our city.

1.  Escape Break at Movies ATL

Deal: Leave your cares at the door and enjoy America's favorite escape activity...a good movie!   on Camp Creek Parkway offers a Tuesday Bail Out Special.  All movies, all day only $5, 3D films are $6.  Also available is a popcorn and drink special for $5.

2.  Stay At Home Break with Netflix 

Deal: Speaking of movies, going out is great, but staying at home to watch a movie with the family can be just as much fun.  Start the summer with a one month free trial, then pay only $7.99 for unlimited movies and tv shows that can be watched on your television, computer, smartphone or through your Wii, Xbox and Ps3.   With their instant watch feature you'll never need to return a DVD to a drop box again! 

Super Frugal Tip:  Ditch the cable for the rest of the year and watch shows like "Dexter," "Glee" and even the entire season of "Lost" on Netflix.  There are an abundance of kids shows as well such as "iCarly," "The Suite Life," and "Spongebob."

Deal:  The former residence of the late Dr. Otis Thrash Hammonds who was known throughout Atlanta, in addition to being a prominent physician, as a patron of the arts and collector, boasts over 250 works of art alongside period furnishings.  Guided tours are available.  Admission is free to members, $4 adults, $2 children, students and seniors.

4. Let's Get Physical Break at SweetWater Creek State Park

Deal: For $5 enjoy a moderate 2 mile "Geology Hike" led by Geologist John Johnston during June, July and August.   In addition to learning about rock formations and types, hikers will also get to go inside of the Civil War era ruins of the Manchester Mill , which was burned by Sherman's troops in 1864. 

Super Frugal Tip: Do it yourself for free.  Go alone or take the family for an easy, moderate or difficult hike through the creek's 9 miles of trails.  Fishing boat and canoe rentals are also available and a bait shop is on the park grounds.

Deal:  Free continues on Mondays at 11am during the month of June at Camp Creek's Barnes and Noble location.  In addition, free Wi-Fi is available at all Barnes and Noble stores, including the Camp Creek location. 

Super Frugal Tip:  If you were signed up with during February then you saw the 50% coupon offered for Barnes and Noble, pay $10 for $20 worth of merchandise.  A deal like this will likely come again, so sign up with a few and save, save, save!
