400 New Tasers Coming to our Zone 1 & 4 Officers in the Fall

In an attempt to cut down on using deadly force, APD will get 400 new tasers.

Chief Turner, of the Atlanta Police Department, recently announced that they have purchased 400 new Tasers for $800,000.  The Tasers will be divided amongst police officers from Zone 1, Zone 3, and Zone 4.

Tasers deliver an electric shock to the person shot by one of them, and he or she is debilitated for a moment so that police can take control of the situation.  APD says the ability to use Tasers will help them avoid using deadly force in certain situations, and is a step in the right direction.

There are no studies showing that Tasers will lower the crime rate, but studies do show that the use of Tasers lowers the amount of bystanders and officers injured during incidents.

The AJC has quoted the APD spokesperson, Carlos Campos, as saying:

The department decided to use Tasers because they could be "safe and viable alternatives to deadly force ... We believe this is a safe and effective alternative tool."
