APD Zone 3 Getting New Commander

The changes are effective Jan. 16.

GRANT PARK — The Atlanta Police Department's Zone 3, which includes Chosewood Park, Peoplestown, Summerhill and Thomasville Heights, is getting a new commander.

Maj. Barbara Cavender, who led the zone since 2011 is being tapped be the commander of the Criminal Investigations Division's Special Enforcement Section.

Zone 3's new commander will be Maj. Jeff Glazier, who is currently assigned to APD's police academy.

The changes are effective Jan. 16. They come as the city expects to construct the new Zone 3 headquarters in the Southwest Atlanta neighborhood of Pekerson, near the city of East Point.

That project, which is expected to begin this year, is necessary because Zone 3's current central offices are in Grant Park. But after APD's neighborhood patrol realignments at the end of 2011, Grant Park was added to Zone 6's jurisdiction.

In an e-mail, Cavender expressed thanks for the community's support during her time at Zone 3, noted that crime fell on her watch and said residents would be pleased with her successor:

"I wanted to say how much I appreciate the opportunity afforded to me in working Zone 3 since 2011.

The experience and relationships with Council, D.A.'s Office, citizens and neighborhoods were invaluable to me and the crime fighting effort.

Zone 3 was down 15 percent in 2012, and down another 4 percent in 2013.
This was due to all the community involvement, hard working Zone 3 personnel and other agencies, divisions and departmental support. It is bittersweet that I will now be moving to the Criminal Investigations Division, Special Enforcement Section (SES).

However, in SES I will be able to continue supporting not only Zone 3 but city-wide efforts.

Major Jeff Glazier will be coming to Zone 3 from the Academy. He will be a great addition to the Zone 3 Team.

Captain Martin and I will help him make it a smooth transition."
