UPDATED: Armed Robbery Suspects Cause Major Accident in SW Atlanta

Eyewitnesses on scene say suspects had a safe and automatic weapons; police confirm the suspects were fleeing from a robbery.

Two armed robbery suspects caused a major accident in southwest Atlanta Friday afternoon that resulted in injuries.

According to Atlanta police spokesman Carlos Campos, an armed robbery occurred a business called Yasim's, at 1080 Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard.

According to an anonymous eyewitness, two men driving a gold Saturn ran a traffic signal at the intersection of Lamont Drive and Donnley Avenue. A burgundy Acura struck the vehicle, which resulted in the Acura's driver being taken by ambulance to Grady Hospital with severe injuries. The eyewitness said suspects fled the scene on foot, carrying a safe and what appeared to be automatic weapons.

Campos said the suspects were not being chased by police when the accident occurred.

The Acura received extensive front end injury upon hitting the front wall of a home, located at the intersection. Wooden railings leading up to the house's steps were destroyed.  The suspect’s Saturn hit and rested against a light post.

According to a passenger in the Acura, the suspects ran up Lamont Drive toward the Oakland City neighborhood.

“I am very concerned about my friend because he had recently had a stroke," said the passenger, whose name has not been released. "I hope he makes it through.”

The anonymous eyewitness, a West End resident, saw the accident as she waiting for a bus. She told Patch that she wanted to remain unidentified because she was “scared to death.” She stated she saw the Saturn travelling at a high rate of speed, ran a traffic signal at the intersection, and hit the Acura. Then, she saw the two men jump out of the car. She said one of the suspects had a red bandana hanging out of a pocket.

No other descriptions of the suspects have been released by police. Campos said police are still searching for the suspects and continuing their investigation.
