East Point Firefighters Continue Dousing Hotspots at Mattress Company Fire

At 01:05 p.m. East Point Fire Units responded to 1050 Oakleigh Drive on a fire at the Classic Mattress Company.

The East Point Fire Department's Public Information Officer, released this update in regards to the massive mattress warehouse fire on Oakleigh Drive, near Sylvan Road, Wednesday afternoon.

East Point - East Point Firefighters continue to douse hotspots this morning after a flare up overnight at the Classic Mattress Company located at 1050 Oakleigh Drive.  Teams of Fire Crews remained at the location overnight after an early afternoon fire yesterday forced employees to evacuate. 

A secondary survey revealed 10 Trailers damaged, two Dumpsters and approximately 15-20% of the structure which sustained fire and water damage. 

Fire Trucks will remain on the premises today, until the scene is rendered safe.  Yesterday’s fire was fought by East Point Firefighters, along with Hapeville and College Park Fire Departments which provided mutual aid.

There were no injuries to Firefighters or civilians on the scene.

At 01:05 p.m. East Point Fire Units responded to 1050 Oakleigh Drive on a fire at the Classic Mattress Company. Upon arrival, employees of the company had been evacuated, and crews discovered two Dumpsters, five Trailers and a pile of trash fully involved with fire extending into the mattress warehouse measuring approximately 60’ x 200’ in diameter.  Fire units were on the scene at 1:15 p.m. and the fire was under control at 2:14 p.m. 

Fire Crews initiated a Defensive Fire attack deploying two 1-3/4” hand lines, 2 - 3” hand lines 1- Deck Gun and 1 Ladder Pipe.  A total of five Trailers, two Dumpsters and approximately 15-20% of the structure sustained fire and water damage.  There were no injuries to Firefighters or citizens.

East Point deployed three Engines, one Tower, one Rescue and one Command Vehicle, as well as Car 900, Car 901, the PIO, Car 13 and Car 14 for a total of 22 East Point Fire Personnel on the scene. Mutual Aid was requested, with College Park providing one Engine and one Command Vehicle totaling five Firefighters.  Hapeville provided one Engine with two Firefighters for a grand total of 29 Fire Personnel on the scene.
