Atlanta Police on Alert after Gunman Kills 12 at Colorado Movie Theater showing Batman

The APD is on alert after the shooting at a movie theater showing Batman - The Dark Knight.

Chief Turner released this statement after more and more questions swirl around the issue of beefing up security at screenings of the new Batman movie.

12 people are dead and dozens injured as a gunman with at least 4 weapons fired hundreds of bullets inside a midnight screening of Batman in Colorado, Friday morning.  The gunman was caught without incident in the parking lot, but it is still unclear what his motive was. He is being identified as 24 year-old James Holmes from Aurora, CO.

Chief Turner of the Atlanta Police Department released this statement:

At this time, we are not aware of any ongoing or immediate threats to movie theaters. We are in constant contact with the FBI, and if that changes we would immediately act to notify theater owners and patrons and provide extra security.

We have a working relationship with private security agencies in the City of Atlanta, and will certainly assist them with any requests for extra security or patrols to ensure the safety and peace-of-mind of their patrons.

We are saddened and disturbed by what transpired in Colorado and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families, as well as the law enforcement and rescue personnel dealing with the aftermath.

CNN is reporting that the gunman's house had explosives in it, and police had to evacuate the homes immediately surrounding his property.  CNN has obtained the cell phone video that we included in this article.
