Jarvaris Crittenton Arrested in Los Angeles

Ex-NBA player arrested for the murder of 22-year-old mother of four children.

Jarvaris Crittenton was arrested in Los Angeles for the shooting death of Julian Jones, 22, in southeast Atlanta, an FBI spokesman said Tuesday.

Crittenton, 23, was taken into custody late Monday night at John Wayne Airport in Orange County after checking in for a flight to Atlanta, according to a report by Channel 2 News.

“We developed information that he was in the airport and possibly boarding a flight back to Atlanta tonight,” said Scott Garriola of the FBI. “When we responded to the airport, we located him inside the terminal and took him into custody.”

It’s not clear when Crittenton will be extradited back to Atlanta.

His attorneys said he is not guilty and they look forward to getting the case to the courts.

According to Atlanta Police spokesman Carlos Campos, the shooting occurred shortly before 10 p.m. on Aug. 19.

Jones was walking with others near 2915 Macon Dr., in the Glenrose Heights community, when she was shot in the leg and later succumbed to her injuries. Jones was not the intended victim. Authorities say Crittenton was trying to shoot someone that he believes had stolen jewelry from him on April 21.

Crittenton is a former NBA professional basketball player who most recently played with the league’s Washington Wizards. He attended Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy on Campbellton Road and was drafted from Georgia Tech to play for the L.A. Lakers.

According to Courtside Post, this is not the first incident in which deadly force has been used by Crittenton to resolve conflict.

In December, 2009, Crittenton and another Washington Wizard's team player, Gilbert Arenas, were suspended for 50 games without pay by the NBA Commissioner, for bringing unloaded pistols into the team's locker room.

The dispute was over a gambling debt that Arena's owed Crittenton. Both men brandished pistols before the team and the coaches.

Both individuals were charged. Arenas pled guilty to a felony gun charge and was arraigned in March, 2010. Crittenton pled guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge. Both volunteered to engage in community service in order to turn the lessons they have learned into an educational message for others.
