Memorial Service to Honor Fallen Officers, Deputies, and Firefighters

Service Wednesday at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church

Fulton County Public Safety officials will honor firefighters and officers, who have made the ultimate sacrifice serving Fulton County citizens during the Fulton County Public Safety Memorial Service on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at 9:30 a.m.  The service will be held at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at 48 Martin Luther King Jr., Drive in Atlanta.

 Fallen officers, firefighters, and deputies from the Fulton County Marshal’s Department, the Fulton County Police Department, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office and the Fulton County Fire and Rescue Department will be remembered.  Fulton County Commission Chairman John H. Eaves, Fire Chief Larry Few, Marshal Antonio Johnson, Police Chief Cassandra Jones, and Sheriff Ted Jackson will unite to lead the community in paying respects to these public servants who lost their lives in the line of duty.  Fulton County will make a special presentation to the Georgia State Patrol in honor of Trooper Chadwick LeCroy who was killed in the line of duty in 2010 in Fulton County.

Looking back at Fulton’s history, the Fulton County Fire and Rescue Department has lost three firefighters in the line of duty and the Fulton County Marshal’s Department lost one deputy marshal in 1977.  Three officers from the Fulton County Police Department were slain in the line of duty over the years and the Sheriff’s Office, has experienced seven deaths dating as far back as 1921.

According to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, there have been more than 19,000 officers killed in the line of duty in the United States since the first recorded incident in 1791.  The Fallen Firefighters Foundation has established the nationwide Roll of Honor to remember the more than 3,000 firefighters killed in the line of duty since 1981.
