News Nearby: Police Shooting Near Cleveland Avenue at Summerdale Commons

APD officer involved in a shooting on Cleveland Avenue.

Cleveland Elementary School was briefly on lockdown following an incident at the nearby apartments, Summerdale Commons, Wednesday afternoon around 12:30 p.m.

The Atlanta Police Department has confirmed that all of the students and faculty at the school have been accounted for and no harm was done to them.

According to Officer John Chafee, "around 10:45 a.m. on September 11, APD officers were investigating a reported robbery at 2614 Old Hapeville Road. During the course of the investigation, officers encountered an ongoing shootout between multiple individuals shortly before noon at a nearby apartment complex at 2745 Old Hapeville Road."

APD confirms that one of the investigators did discharge his weapon, but it is unclear to Cascade Patch at this time if one of the suspects shot was by an APD firearm or during the shootout before officers arrived.

Chafee says, "Several suspects involved in the incident fled on foot and  in a vehicle across Old Hapeville Road, where they ran off an embankment and crashed into a commercial building. Three of the suspects were taken into custody and transported to Grady hospital in stable condition - two of them for treatment of gunshot wounds and one for treatment of possible injuries sustained following the motor vehicle crash."

The driver of the vehicle also fled on foot and has yet to be apprehended.

Cascade Patch is still waiting to hear details from APD in regards to the officer-involved shooting, and whether it was an APD bullet that struck the suspect.
