Crime & Safety

Photos: National Night Out in SW Atlanta

Families and community members gathered all across the U.S. to celebrate National Night Out.

As families gathered on Tuesday evening to celebrate and to take a visual stance against crime, Cascade Patch decided to visit 2 such neighborhood events and take some pictures.

We first visited the 17th Annual National Night Out West End Community Block Party at located on Hopkins St. in SW Atlanta.  It was there we met Mrs. Rodgers with Atlanta Technical College who was there to sponsor a free health screening and to give away free bookbags to children and adults.  There was food, live jazz music, a few vendors, and even fresh vegetables to pick and take home.  The event was well attended and very organized.

The 2nd location I visited was the The Westview Community Organization's National Night Out event located at the intersection of South Olympian Way and Waters Drive, near Beecher.  Lt. Harris was in attendance talking to members of the community and with children.  Atlanta Fire Department's Engine 14 showed up as well to answer questions and to hang out with the community they serve.

The interesting thing about Westview's location was that it highlighted the fact that kids in that neighborhood need/deserve a place to safely play.  The children in the neighborhood have made a make-shift basketball court, but it is neither safe nor ideal. (see the pictures & video)  Hopefully representatives from the mayor's office that were in attendance will be able to do something about it, now it has come to their attention.

Overall, National Night Out in SW Atlanta seems like it was a success and gave the community another opportunity to meet some of the law enforcement officers and first responders that serve the community.  Until next year...
