UPDATED: Police Seize $5 Million in Counterfeit Goods in West End Market Raid

Six people arrested.

Atlanta police seized scores of counterfeit merchandise Friday from six booths at the West End Market.

In all, the fake goods which included True Religion branded clothes, Louis Vuitton handbags, music CDs and DVDs are valued at $5 million, and police seized several thousand dollars in American currency at the raid at the market, which is located 844 Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard.

  • Aliou Dialo, 54: Charged with Forged or Counterfeited items for sale.
  • Samba Ba, 44: Charged with Forged or Counterfeited items for sale.
  • Bockarie Jalloh, 47: Charged with Forged or Counterfeited items for sale.
  • Mohamed Diallo, 38: Charged with Reproduction of Recorded Material.
  • Macky Traore, 42: Charged with Forged or Counterfeited items for sale.
  • Asdo Chukwu, 36: Charged with Forged or Counterfeited items for sale.

The arrests follow an investigation APD's Crime Suppression Unit conducted in conjunction with the License & Permits Unit on fake goods being sold from the market.

Representatives of several luxury brands, including Coach Inc., Louis Vuitton Malletier S.A. and Gucci S.p.A., were with police during the raid and identified the seized products as fakes.

Counterfeiting and piracy is major criminal enterprise in the United States, costing the economy $1.26 billion in fiscal year 2012, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
