Senator Vincent Fort Battling Prostate Cancer

The State Senator, who represents East Point and a portion of Atlanta, said doctors told him he had cancer during the summer. Fort has said he's optimistic treatment will be successful, according to local news reports.

State Sen. Vincent Fort has disclosed that he has prostate cancer, according to local and regional news reports.

Fort, 55, told The Associated Press he was diagnosed this summer and is deciding now on a course of treatment. He said doctors told him he had cancer during the summer and he's optimistic treatment will be successful.

The longtime Atlanta Democrat told Channel 2 Action News that he will miss the beginning of the 2012 legislative session because of treatment he is receiving for stage 2 prostate cancer.

Fort said that despite the diagnosis he feels great and is looking forward to getting back to the Senate following his treatment.

Fort is the Senate Democratic whip. He is serving his sixth term in the Georgia Senate.

Fort is known as a vocal advocate for the poor. He was among those arrested during an Occupy Atlanta protest in October and was also a frequent presence at rallies opposing the state's tough immigration bill, according to a report on the WSB website.
