Carla Smith, District 1 City Council Rep, to Seek Re-election

'I have every intention of running again this year to continue the successes our district has achieved over the years.'

Atlanta City Councilwoman Carla Smith said Friday she will seek re-election for her District 1 seat in November 2013.

“The information circulating on online media regarding me not seeking re-election is erroneous," Smith said in a statement. "I have every intention of running again this year to continue the successes our district has achieved over the years.”

Smith is currently implementing the recommendations from the South Moreland Livable Centers Initiative Study and beginning a Lakewood LCI Study. Smith also has been heavily involved in environmental issues.

She has served on several other committees and boards before coming to City Hall, including: chairwoman of the SAND Welcoming Committee, chairwoman of St. Paul Golden Age Center and as a board member of the SAND Credit Union, the Atlanta Project Public Safety Committee, Cluster 5 and NPU-W.

As District 1 representative, Smith has served on the Public Safety and Legal Administration, City Utilities, Transportation, and Zoning committees.

Smith also has served as chairwoman of the Committee on Council for two years.

Best thing to come out of Texas since I-20! You folks at The Patch about gave me a heart attack with the mention in an that she wasn't running again. i called her as soon as I could, and was relieved to hear that she was indeed planning to run. Carla and her staff- Sheryl Bennett and Brenda Hampton-have made SE ATL a much, much better place. I cannot possibly enumerate all the ways they have helped me personally. On bigger levels, their influence is often not known, as they like to work on a personal level, and not take credit for what gets done- and people say there are no good politicians? We are very lucky to have these gems here! Thank You for your service, Carla, Sheryl and Brenda!

Good to hear she's done a good job, but the City Council raises were ridiculous and she was on the wrong side of this issue: http://www.ajc.com/news/news/breaking-news/atlanta-city-council-votes-on-50-percent-pay-incre/nTL23/

For the amount of work she does, her pay still isn't high enough.
