Eshé Collins Announces Candidacy for APS Board of Education, District 6

District 6 covers schools in our area including Beecher Hills, Cascade Elementary, and Therrell High.

The following is an announcement we received from the campaign offices of Eshe Collins.  According to the letter below, Eshe is running for the District 6 APS Board of Education seat, which is not occupied by Yolanda Johnson.

Atlanta, Ga - Eshé Collins, Atlanta native and former teacher with Atlanta Public Schools, announced today that she has begun the campaign with a strong foundation for victory in her bid to represent the students of District 6 on the Atlanta Board of Education.

“I’m humbled, gratified and energized by the early support I have received for the campaign. In the coming weeks and months, I plan to strengthen my connection with the community, hear what they want in our school system and create a shared vision for a brighter future for all Atlanta’s children.” Collins stated.

Collins’s diverse background in education, policy and law, gives her a unique insight into what it will take to improve Atlanta Public Schools for every child. As a child, she lived in a district that lacked a great school system so much that her mother sent her to live with relatives to avoid attending a failing school. This experience began her fight for equitable education for all children. Later, Collins became an elementary school teacher, studied children’s issues as a policy analyst and trained community members to serve throughout the Atlanta area.

Eshe’ Collins is a proud graduate of Spelman College and taught at A.D. Williams Elementary School in Atlanta. She earned her Master’s degree in Urban Teacher Leadership from Georgia State University and law degree, with honors, from the North Carolina Central University School of Law. Currently, Collins is the Project Director for Jumpstart at Georgia State University, an early education, non-profit organization that educates children in low-income neighborhoods.

“I’ve devoted my entire career to making sure every child has the opportunity to get a high-quality education. I’ve learned that the education of our children is a community responsibility and that quality schools are essential to the success of our students and our city.”

Collins continued, “Like all Atlantans, I am outraged by the cheating scandal. I believe that our public schools provide our greatest hope for building vibrant and productive communities. I’m running to restore that hope.’

District 6 is currently represented by Yolanda Johnson who is reportedly not seeking re-election. The district includes the following schools: Beecher Hills, Cascade, Cleveland Avenue, Continental Colony, Deerwood Academy, Fickett, Heritage Academy, Bunche, Long, Sylvan Hills, South Atlanta Educational Complex and D.M. Therrell Educational Complex.
