11 a.m. Court Appearance for Suspect in DUI Crash that Killed Officer

Senior Officer Gail Thomas was the second female Atlanta police officer to be killed in the line of duty.

 

The 22-year-old woman accused of killing a veteran Atlanta police officer is scheduled to appear in court at 11 a.m. today, according to Fulton County Sheriff's spokesperson Tracy Flanagan.

Police say Chasity Jones of Stone Mountain current charges are DUI, first-degree vehicular homicide and failure to yield to person authorized to direct traffic.

Senior Police officer Gail Thomas, a 15-year veteran of the Atlanta Police Department, was struck and killed on the I-75/I-85 Brookhaven Tuesday evening.

According to a statement on the Atlanta Police Department's website, Thomas was killed when she stepped out of her patrol car on the shoulder of I-75 southbound to assist a fellow officer who was working a traffic accident. The car that struck Thomas, police said, was driven by Jones.

Thomas, 46, of Zone 5, was the second female Atlanta police officer to be killed in the line of duty, according to Police Chief George Turner. April marks the 12th anniversary of the death of Officer Sherry Lyons Williams, killed while serving an arrest warrant.
