Inaugural Tup Holmes Golf Classic Friday

Atlanta City Council President , a West End Atlanta resident, and the Atlanta Department of Parks Recreation and Cultural Affairs will host the inaugural Alfred "Tup" Holmes Golf Classic Friday at the in Adams Park.

Mitchell and nationally-acclaimed amateur golfer Mariah Stackhouse and other professional athletes will join members of the Alfred “Tup” Holmes family for the tournament, according to a news release from the city. Th

The inaugural event begins at 10:00 am and golfers will tee off at 11:30 am. Stackhouse, who is ranked 20th in the world among amateur golfers, will give remarks prior to the first tee.

“This is a wonderful event that celebrates the legacy of a family and a great golfer who would not be denied an opportunity to play golf anywhere in the city,” Mitchell said in the news statement. “We expect this outing to become a premier charity golf event for years to come.”

Registration for the golf tournament is now open. The event includes 18 holes of golf, gifts, lunch and a cart for $50 per person. 

The Alfred Tup Holmes Golf Classic will bring to a close to a yearlong celebration of the 60th anniversary of the desegregation of the city of Atlanta’s public places, including golf courses.

The Holmes family of golfers, led by eldest son Alfred “Tup” Holmes, fought against the city's barring of African-Americans to the all-white public golf courses. They eventually took their case all the way to the Supreme Court and won the right to play and integrating all of Atlanta’s public golf courses.

The Tup Holmes classic will benefit the City of Atlanta's First Tee program, based at , and the Youth of Urban Roots Junior Golf Foundation. The Alfred Tup Holmes Golf Course is located at 2300 Wilson Drive.
